How to Tell if Your Gold Jewelry is Real:
There are a few tests you can do to make sure any gold you would like to sell is real.
Nitric Acid Test - Make a very tiny nick on the item and drop a small amount of nitric acid onto it. If the spot turns green, your gold is fake. If it turns a milky color, you’ve got sterling silver. If there is no reaction, the item is genuine gold.
Density Test - Since gold has a higher density than other metals, it should sink when in water. Place your jewelry in a large cup of water. Real gold jewelry will sink while fake jewelry will float right to the surface.
Magnet Test - For this test, a high-strength magnet is required. Place the item close to the magnet and see if there is any reaction. If your jewelry is attracted to the magnet, it is fake gold. If there is a little attraction but the jewelry does not stick to the magnet, there is a low percentage of gold. If there is no reaction at all, then it is most likely real gold.
